You've found the collab cafe. The menu looks incredible. The exclusive merch is exactly what you want. You tap the booking link and โ it's entirely in Japanese. Every field is unreadable. The time slots show ๆบๅธญ over and over. You close the tab.
This is the single most common frustration overseas anime fans face when visiting Japan. Collab cafes are one of Tokyo's best pop culture experiences, and the booking process is designed for Japanese speakers with Japanese phone numbers and Japanese payment methods.
But you can get through it. This guide covers the three booking systems you'll actually encounter, with the Japanese vocabulary you need to navigate each one โ no Chrome translate guesswork required.
Just want to know what's open right now? Check our Anime Events Calendar for every current collab cafe with dates and booking status, updated daily.

Most collab cafes in Tokyo use one of the top three. If you can handle BOX, Lawson Ticket, and Animate Cafe's lottery, you can book 90% of what's out there.
The Timeline: When to Do What
Collab cafes follow a predictable cycle. Most international visitors miss bookings not because the system is hard, but because they act too late.
5-6 weeks before opening โ Cafe announced on X/Twitter โ Note the dates. Check if it overlaps your trip.
3-4 weeks before โ Menu revealed. Booking dates announced. โ Create accounts NOW (Lawson Ticket, Club Animate). Don't wait.
2-3 weeks before โ Reservations open. Popular cafes sell out in 3-5 minutes. โ Be online at the exact opening time. Have your info ready to paste.
1 week before โ Cancellations start appearing โ Check the booking page daily. Slots reappear without announcement.
24-48 hours before โ Last-minute cancellations โ Check one more time.
Day of โ Walk-in is your last option โ Weekday mornings, 15 min before opening. Ask: ้ฃใณๅ ฅใใฏใงใใพใใ๏ผ
Before You Book Anything: Prep Checklist
Do this the day before reservations open โ not the day of.
- Create your accounts โ Lawson Ticket (l-tike.com) and Club Animate (animate.co.jp). Both free, both require email verification that can take hours.
- Prepare your info in a notes app โ Full name (passport spelling), email, phone number (your home country number works on most platforms), group size.
- Open the booking URL in advance โ It's shared in the cafe's announcement tweet. Load the page on your computer, not phone. Faster typing = faster booking.
- Set an alarm for 2 minutes before โ Reservations open at a specific time (usually noon JST). Be ready.
Platform 1: BOX cafe&space (First-Come)
BOX cafe operates Conan, Sanrio, and many mixed-franchise cafes at locations across Tokyo (Solamachi, Ikebukuro, etc.). Their booking system is the most straightforward for foreigners.
How it works: Reservations open at a set date/time. You pick a date, time slot, and group size. First come, first served. No lottery.
Step by step:
- Go to the booking page (linked from the cafe announcement or our events calendar)
- Select ๆฅไป (date) โ ๆ้ (time) โ ไบบๆฐ (number of people)
- Fill in ๅๅ (name), ใกใผใซใขใใฌใน (email), ้ป่ฉฑ็ชๅท (phone)
- Confirm and pay โ most BOX cafes accept credit card at booking
- Screenshot your confirmation email
Tips:
- No account needed โ one less barrier
- Weekday lunch slots (11:00-14:00) are the last to sell out
- The Solamachi (Skytree) location is consistently the least competitive
Platform 2: Lawson Ticket / Loppi (First-Come)
Lawson Ticket (l-tike.com) handles Sweets Paradise collabs, many one-off events, and some BOX cafe overflow. It's harder because payment requires a Loppi machine inside a physical Lawson store.
The catch: You book online, but you pay and pick up tickets at a Loppi machine in Lawson โ within 3 days of booking, or your reservation is cancelled.
Step by step:
- Create account at l-tike.com (look for ไผๅก็ป้ฒ โ member registration)
- When reservations open, search for the event name or use the direct link
- Select date and time โ fill in your details โ submit
- You'll receive a ไบ็ด็ชๅท (reservation number) and ้ป่ฉฑ็ชๅท (phone number linked to booking)
- Go to any Lawson โ find the Loppi machine (red kiosk, usually near the entrance)
- On Loppi: press ๅ็จฎ็ชๅทใใๆใกใฎๆน (I have a number) โ enter your reservation number โ enter your phone number โ print the receipt
- Take the receipt to the register โ pay in cash โ receive your tickets
Tips:
- You have 3 days to pick up at Loppi. Don't cut it close.
- Your international phone number works for the online booking, but enter it exactly the same way at the Loppi machine
- If you're stuck at Loppi, show the clerk your confirmation email and say ใใญใใใผใใ้กใใใพใใโ they deal with confused users constantly
Platform 3: Animate Cafe (Lottery)
Animate Cafe is the hardest for foreigners โ and it's the platform you'll encounter most. Almost every major anime IP collab (Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia, Haikyuu, Demon Slayer) runs through Animate Cafe, and almost all of them use a lottery system.
How it works: You don't race to book. You enter a lottery during a multi-day window. Winners are randomly selected. This is actually better in one way โ your chances are the same as everyone else's, and you don't need to be online at the exact second.
Step by step:
- Create a Club Animate account at animate.co.jp (you can log in via X/Twitter, LINE, or Facebook to skip most Japanese forms)
- When the lottery opens (announced on @animatecafe on X), go to the lottery page
- Select ๅธๆๆฅ (preferred date), ๅธๆๆ้ (preferred time), ไบบๆฐ (group size)
- Submit your entry โ enter for multiple dates to maximize your odds
- Wait 3-7 days for results. Check your email (and spam folder โ it comes from animate.co.jp)
- If you win โ confirm within the deadline
- If you lose โ check for second-round lottery or first-come-first-served openings 3-5 days before the collab starts
Tips:
- Enter for Nagoya and Osaka lotteries too, if your trip includes those cities. Far fewer applicants = much better odds.
- Animate Cafe will NOT seat walk-ins. Ever. Don't show up without a reservation.
- If you lose the lottery, Gratte stands inside Animate stores are the backup โ same exclusive artwork on ยฅ700-900 latte art drinks, no reservation needed.

When Everything Is Sold Out
It happens. Here's what to do, in order of likelihood:
1. Check for cancellations daily. Slots reappear on the booking page without any announcement. Best times to check: morning (9-10 AM JST) and late evening (10-11 PM JST).
2. Walk-in on a weekday morning. Many cafes hold back walk-in slots or open no-show seats. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings have the highest success rate. Arrive 15-30 minutes before opening. Ask: ้ฃใณๅ ฅใใฏใงใใพใใ๏ผ (tobiiri wa dekimasu ka? โ Are walk-ins available?)
3. Try the last 2-3 days of the collab. Initial hype fades. Cancellations pile up. Slots that were sold out for opening week sometimes open for the final days.
4. Go to Gratte or DECOTTO instead. Animate's walk-in options. Gratte = character latte art drinks (ยฅ700-900). DECOTTO = character donuts and waffles. Same exclusive artwork, same collectible bonuses, zero reservation needed. Available at Animate Ikebukuro, Akihabara, Shibuya.
5. Let us handle it. Our Buy For Me service can book cafes on your behalf, pick up exclusive merchandise, and ship it to you. If you couldn't get a reservation but want the limited merch, we can source it. โ Check Buy For Me
Day of Your Visit
Arrive 5-10 minutes early. Time slots are strict โ your 80-90 minute window starts at the scheduled time whether you're there or not. Most cafes cancel no-shows after 15 minutes.
Bring: Reservation confirmation (screenshot on your phone), payment method (cash accepted everywhere, credit cards at most cafes), passport if you want tax-free merchandise purchases over ยฅ5,000.
Minimum order: Usually 1 food + 1 drink per person. Some cafes only require 1 drink. Expect to spend ยฅ1,500-2,500 per person for a standard order.
Bonus items: Each menu item you order earns one random collectible โ a coaster, postcard, sticker, or similar. The character you receive is random. Order more items for more chances. Trading with other guests is common and socially encouraged at collab cafes.
Merchandise: Buy what you want immediately. Popular character items sell out within the first few days of a collaboration and do not restock.
Photos: Food and decoration photography is always allowed and encouraged. Flash is usually banned. Look for designated photo spots with character standees โ they're typically near the entrance or in a dedicated corner.
Options That Require Zero Booking
If the reservation process is more hassle than you want to deal with, these alternatives give you a collab cafe experience with no advance planning:
Gratte stands at Animate stores. Small drink counters inside Animate stores serving character-themed lattes and iced cookies. Collaborations rotate every 2 weeks. Walk up, order (ยฅ700-900), receive your drink with character latte art plus a random collectible bonus. Available at Animate Ikebukuro (basement), Akihabara ANNEX, Shibuya, and more.
DECOTTO by Animate Cafe. Takeout donut and waffle shop with character-themed items. Same collaboration themes as the main Animate Cafe but with separate (and usually available) walk-in access. Ikebukuro location is the primary one.
Permanent themed cafes. These don't change themes, but they offer a similar atmosphere year-round: CAPCOM Cafe in Ikebukuro and Umeda, Eorzea Cafe (Final Fantasy) in Akihabara, ARTNIA (Square Enix) in Shinjuku. All accept walk-ins during off-peak hours.
Merchandise-only pop-ups. Events like Jujutsu Kaisen PLAZA at Loft or seasonal pop-ups at Animate stores are walk-in only. No food, no reservation โ just exclusive merch you can browse and buy.
FAQ
Can I book from outside Japan?
Yes, for most platforms. Lawson Ticket sometimes requires SMS verification to a Japanese number โ in that case, wait until you arrive and use your hotel's help, or use Buy For Me to book for you.
Do I need to speak Japanese at the cafe?
No. Menus have pictures and item numbers. Point at what you want and show fingers for quantity. Staff at tourist-area cafes understand basic English ordering.
How much does a collab cafe visit cost?
Budget ยฅ1,500-2,500 per person for food and drinks (1 food + 1 drink minimum). Merchandise is separate, typically ยฅ500-1,500 per item. Total including merch: ยฅ3,000-5,000 per person is common.
Can I visit multiple collab cafes in one day?
Yes. Ikebukuro alone has enough for a full day โ morning slot at one cafe, Gratte and Animate shopping between meals, evening slot at a different cafe. Leave 30 minutes of travel buffer between time slots.
What if I can't book anything at all?
Gratte stands and DECOTTO at Animate stores require zero reservation. Permanent themed cafes like CAPCOM Cafe and Eorzea Cafe accept walk-ins. Or Buy For Me can attend and purchase exclusive merchandise on your behalf.
What's the difference between a collab cafe and a maid cafe?
Collab cafes feature a specific anime or game franchise with themed food and exclusive merchandise, running for a limited period (usually 2-8 weeks). Maid cafes are permanent establishments with costumed staff serving regular food. Completely different experience.
Can I get the cafe-exclusive merchandise without visiting?
Yes. Most collab cafe exclusives appear on Mercari Japan within days. Use a proxy service, or Buy For Me can source specific items for you. Some items also appear at Animate stores after the cafe collaboration ends, though this varies.
I'm visiting with kids. Are collab cafes family-friendly?
Generally yes. Collab cafes are all-ages and serve regular food (pasta, curry, desserts) with themed presentation. Children count toward the group size for booking purposes. Strollers may be difficult in smaller venues โ check the specific cafe's notes.
